In Katan silk, a term used locally in Varanasi, yarns are prepared by wrapping different silk threads making them very strong and durable. The origin of the Katan silk saree can be traced back to Persia, though it is now weaved in Banaras. The women of the royal family during the Mughal Empire were the ones who wore luxurious clothes made of Katan silk.
